Medical Astrology and the Four Humours: Your Constitutional Health Blueprint
Healing begins with knowing yourself. The ancient physicians understood something modern medicine has largely forgotten: you cannot heal what you do not understand.
Hippocrates said that a physician without a knowledge of astrology has no right to call himself a physician. It was not a casual remark. It was a clinical principle, and medical astrology, read through the four humours, shaped the practice of medicine for over two thousand years. The idea was simple and profound: every body is constitutionally unique, and understanding that constitution is the first step in understanding health.
I have built my practice on this principle. Not because it is mystical, but because it works. After twenty seven years in nursing, much of it in critical care, I have watched people follow good advice and still get nowhere, simply because the advice was never designed for the body they actually live in. When you truly know yourself, when you understand the patterns your body naturally moves through, the systems that are most sensitive, the seasons that challenge you and the rhythms that restore you, health stops being something you chase and becomes something you live.
This is what the Greeks called gnosis, self-knowledge as medicine. It is at the heart of everything I do.
Why One-Size-Fits-All Health Advice Keeps Failing You
If you have ever followed a protocol to the letter and still felt no better, you are not failing. The protocol is failing you. Modern medicine excels at acute care, emergency intervention and pharmaceutical innovation. But when it comes to the slow, layered, deeply personal business of chronic health, fatigue, hormonal disruption, digestive distress and the quiet erosion of vitality, it often falls short for one reason: it does not account for the individual.
Two people with identical symptoms may need entirely different approaches. One runs hot and inflamed, the other cold and stagnant. One thrives on routine and grounding, the other needs variety and movement. One absorbs stress through the gut, the other through the nervous system. The ancients understood this intuitively. They built entire medical systems around it.
Constitutional medicine, in all its forms, begins with one question: who is this person, and how does their body naturally work?
How I Read Your Constitutional Health Blueprint
My constitutional assessment rests on two things: your natal chart read through the classical humoral tradition, and the honest, ordinary record of how you actually feel from day to day. Each offers a different angle on the same fundamental question: what is the natural terrain of your body, and where does it need the most support?
The Four Humours and Elemental Balance in Your Birth Chart
Your natal chart, calculated from the precise moment and location of your birth, maps the planetary positions that were present when you drew your first breath. In the tradition of iatromathematics, each planet governs specific body systems, each zodiac sign rules anatomical regions, and the balance of the four elements (Fire, Earth, Air, Water) reveals your humoral temperament: Choleric, Melancholic, Sanguine or Phlegmatic.
The four elements are not decoration. In the classical system they are the language of physiology, and each one carries a humour, a temperament and a set of tendencies that show up in the body long before anything shows up on a test result.
Fire
Choleric · hot and dry · yellow bile
The element of drive, metabolism and digestive heat, traditionally linked to the liver and gallbladder. Fire-led constitutions tend to run warm, decisive and fast. When the heat builds, it shows as inflammation, reflux, tension headaches, irritability and the particular exhaustion that follows burning too hard for too long.
Earth
Melancholic · cold and dry · black bile
The element of structure and substance: bones, teeth, skin and the slow, steady work of holding form. Earth-led constitutions are enduring and methodical. Out of balance they tend towards dryness, stagnation, stiffness, sluggish digestion and a mind that turns the same thought over long after it has been useful.
Air
Sanguine · hot and moist · blood
The element of circulation, breath and the nervous system, the part of you that moves, connects and communicates. Air-led constitutions are quick, social and adaptable. When depleted they scatter: restless sleep, changeable appetite, nervous fatigue, and a sense of being everywhere at once and nowhere in particular.
Water
Phlegmatic · cold and moist · phlegm
The element of fluids, lymph, immunity and feeling. Water-led constitutions are receptive, steady and deeply resourced. When the balance tips they hold rather than move: congestion, puffiness, heaviness in the limbs, a slow metabolism and emotion that settles in the body instead of passing through.
Most people are a blend, with one element leading and another quietly missing. Working out your elemental balance, and specifically where you are short, is one of the first things I do with a birth chart, because it tells me which direction your body is most likely to drift under pressure.
This is not a horoscope. It is a constitutional blueprint. It shows you where heat accumulates, where cold stagnates, where your nervous system is most reactive, and where your body holds its deepest resilience. Nicholas Culpeper built his entire herbal practice on these correspondences. Galen used the humoral system as his primary diagnostic framework. I continue that lineage, combining it with modern integrative health knowledge to make it genuinely useful in your daily life.
Symptom Tracking and Pattern Recognition
Constitutional assessment tells you the terrain. Symptom tracking tells you the weather. By recording your energy, digestion, sleep quality, mood and physical symptoms alongside the lunar cycle, the seasons and your personal transit windows, patterns begin to emerge that no single blood test or consultation can capture.
This is not obsessive self-monitoring. It is body consciousness, and it is where all of this work begins. When you learn to read your own rhythms with the same curiosity and precision that a clinician reads lab results, you stop reacting to symptoms and start understanding the intelligence behind them. You become fluent in the language your body is already speaking.
Together, these two lenses form a complete picture. Medical astrology reveals the constitutional architecture. Symptom tracking grounds it in lived, daily experience. Self-knowledge becomes actionable.
Deep One to One Care: Functional, Energetic and Shadow Work
Understanding the terrain is the beginning, not the end. Where the constitutional picture becomes genuinely useful is in one to one work, and that work is never the same twice, because it is led entirely by what you need rather than by a protocol I hand out to everyone.
For many people the first layer is functional medicine. We look at root causes rather than symptom lists: digestion and the gut, blood sugar, thyroid and adrenal patterns, hormonal rhythm, nutrient status, sleep, inflammation and the load your nervous system is carrying. Where you already have bloods or investigations, I read them alongside your chart, because the two together often explain something neither explains alone. Food, herbs, movement and daily rhythm are matched to your constitution rather than to a trend, and my clinical training means I know where the boundaries are and when something belongs with your doctor.
For others, the work is more energetic. Some bodies hold their story in the tissue and the breath long after the tests come back clear. That layer is worked gently, through grounding, breath, the nervous system, and the quiet attention that lets a body stop bracing. It supports everything else, and for some people it is the piece that finally lets the physical work land.
And for some, the deepest movement happens in the shadow. The chart is unusually honest about this. It shows where you learned to override yourself, the patterns you inherited, the parts of your nature you were taught to hide, and the exhaustion that follows a lifetime of living against your own grain. Bringing those places into the light is not a detour from physical health. It is very often the reason the physical health would not shift.
Which of these we lean on, and in what order, is decided by you and by what your body is asking for at the time. That is what makes it deep one to one care rather than a plan. You are not being processed through a system. You are being met.

Self-Knowledge as the Foundation of Whole-Person Health
The inscription at the Temple of Apollo at Delphi read gnothi seauton: know thyself. It was not a philosophical nicety. It was a medical instruction. The ancient healers understood that self-knowledge is the prerequisite for lasting health, not the luxury you earn after you have already healed.
That is why I have built every part of this work, every tool and every piece of writing, around one central idea: when you genuinely understand yourself, your constitution, your patterns, your rhythms and your sensitivities, you stop chasing fixes and start building a life that supports the body you actually have.
Predisposition is not predestination. Your constitutional vulnerabilities are the very places where you can develop your deepest resilience. The chart shows patterns, not destiny. With the right understanding, you can work with those patterns rather than against them.
You do not need to have it all figured out. You just need to start.
