Reference Guide

Astrology can feel like learning a whole new language, and in many ways it is. This is the phrasebook.

Between the planets, the signs, the houses and the web of aspects connecting them, it is easy to feel overwhelmed. What follows is not deep analysis. It is a clear, simple reference you can come back to again and again as you explore your own health blueprint, whether you are looking up a planet in your chart or simply curious about what a particular house governs.

As a nurse of 27 years who also reads charts, I find these foundations are where the real understanding starts. Everything else builds on them.

Questions to ask your own chart

When you look at your natal chart through a medical astrology lens, the quality of what you find depends almost entirely on the quality of the questions you bring. These are the ones I work through.

Overall health foundation

  • What does my Ascendant sign and its element suggest about my physical constitution and resilience? Fire and Earth ascendants are traditionally considered more robust.
  • What condition is the ruler of my Ascendant in? Mine is Scorpio rising, ruled by Mars, and my Mars sits in debility in the 12th house in Libra, conjunct Venus and Pluto. He is not strong there, and that tells me a great deal.
  • What does my Sun's placement say about vitality, life force and energy reserves, including heart function and metabolism? The Sun is the vigour, the Moon is the bodily health.
  • What does my Moon say about bodily health, emotional wellbeing, fluid balance and eating habits? For women the Moon carries particular weight, given its rulership of the reproductive system and hormonal rhythm. It is also the main distributor within the body.
  • What does the sign, house and aspect condition of my chart ruler add about inherent strengths and weaknesses? This planet stands for the physical body itself.
  • What is my temperature picture, read through the condition of Saturn and Mars, too hot or too cold?
  • Where are the excesses and deficiencies, read through the lunar nodes?

Daily habits and health maintenance

  • What does the sign on my 6th house suggest about health routines, nutritional needs and the kind of exercise that suits me? An earth sign here might point towards mindful eating and a need for routine.
  • What do any planets in my 6th house, and their nature, reflect about daily stressors, work habits and my approach to self-care?
  • What does the placement and condition of my 6th house ruler suggest about maintaining health through lifestyle?

Illness, healing and deeper patterns

  • What does my 6th house and its ruler suggest about predispositions to illness, particularly chronic or recurring patterns, and those most responsive to diet and lifestyle?
  • What does my 8th house say about capacity for deep psychological healing, and about my relationship with trauma and transformative experience?
  • What does my 12th house indicate about sleep quality, mental health and the ability to rest and recover? It is considered the second most prominent house for illness.
  • Are there recurring signatures in my chart, a pile-up in one modality, or a marked excess or deficiency of an element?

Underlying energetic dynamics

  • How does the balance of elements shape my temperament, my vitality and my likely health tendencies?
  • What does the balance of modalities, cardinal, fixed and mutable, reveal about how my energy moves, and about acute versus chronic tendencies?
  • How does the Lot of Fortune and its ruler relate to physical wellbeing and the capacity to work through challenges?

Planetary and aspect insights

  • Where do challenging aspects, squares, oppositions and quincunxes, point to friction or imbalance in a particular body system?
  • What does essential dignity, rulership, exaltation, detriment, fall or peregrine, tell me about how strongly a planet can express its physiological function?

A natal chart shows predisposition and potential, never a predetermined outcome. Its purpose is clarity, so you can make better informed decisions about your health in partnership with the people who care for you clinically.

Good to know

These guides complement medical care, they do not replace it. They also work best with whole-chart thinking: the planet tells you what, the sign tells you how, the house tells you where, all of it moderated by aspect and by timing.

Take any single line here in isolation and it will mislead you. Read the whole picture and it starts to become genuinely useful.
